Strategically situated at a European
crossroads, the Port of Bayonne offers its clients a first-rate logistics platform
capable of handling all types of traffic (solids,
liquids, varied merchandise, metallurgical products, containers, ro-ro's, coastal
trade, special loads, etc)
Its placement at the intersection of two motorways (north/south and east/west), directly linked to the European rail network and benefiting from its proximity to the international airport in Biarritz, means that the Port of Bayonne is instrumental in
regional and cross-border economic development.
The road network for the Port of Bayonne comprises the A63 motorway to Bordeaux and Spain and the A64 linking Bayonne to Pau and Toulouse. Locally in Bayonne the average traffic figures are 31,500 vehicles per
day, a large number of which are heavy goods vehicles.
Traffic flow is also substantial on the main national roads : the RN10 sees 19,700 vehicles per
day; the RN117 some 16,700 vehicles per day. As an indication of "industrial"
traffic, the RD85 known as the "industrial
road" for the Port of Bayonne registers some 7,500 vehicles per
day.
Situated 5km for the Port of Bayonne and 10km from Biarritz airport is the Centre Européen de Frêt de
Mouguerre, which numbers an average 6,000 heavy goods trucks. 30 hectares of the 100-hectare site have to date been taken up and 45,000m² of warehousing is currently
occupied.
Biarritz airport is ranked 14th on a national level in relation to the amount of traffic that it handles annually : in 2001 some 790,631 passengers used this
airport. Daily connecting flights are available with Paris - Lyon -Clermont-Ferrand and London. Total freight for 2001 was 534 metric tons.
